CHALICE BEARERS

I have been a Reader and Chalice bearer most of my adult life. Throw in Acolytes and it has been almost 60 years. I have never regretted getting involved. All of these assignments are ‘assisting’ the priest; they have no independent functions. Being a Chalice Bearer has a direct contact, first with the priest as he gives us the elements to pass on and then to those receiving the communion. There is a sense of prayer as we say the words, “The cup of salvation, the blood of Christ” and offer the chalice. It is a very personal prayer.

We use 11 Chalice Bearers each week. That makes 44 to 55 servants each month plus special services. We currently have 56 volunteers and are need of a few more.

The Diocese licenses Chalice Bearers. The requirements are that you be a confirmed adult at least 18 and a member of St. Peter’s. Our Priest must also approve of each volunteer. There is some training involved. It takes about 90 minutes to run through the assignment. The routine is straight forward, but we talk about what you can expect and where you find things.

A newcomer came to St. Peter’s in search of a church to start attending. He drops in just in time to hear, “We have left undone those things we should have done and we have done those things that we should not have done.” The newcomer smiles and says to himself, “I found my church.”

Peace, Tony Hewitt.
